Our verdict

Cursor is still one of the best AI coding experiences, with fast autocomplete, a capable agent and cloud agents that work in the background. Since its acquisition by SpaceX, though, pricing has moved into the X Subscription: the $8 Plus plan only includes Grok models, and Anthropic, OpenAI and Google models now cost extra at API rates from the $30 Premium plan up. Check how much you rely on third-party models before switching plans.

Best for: Developers who want an AI-native editor with a powerful built-in agent

Pros

  • Excellent autocomplete and an agent that edits across files
  • Cloud agents, automations and Bugbot AI code reviews on Premium
  • Familiar VS Code-based editor with extensions
  • Cheap $8 entry plan if Grok models are enough

Cons

  • Third-party models (Claude, GPT, Gemini) now billed separately at API rates
  • Plus plan is limited to Grok models
  • Pricing bundled with X features many developers do not need
  • Pricing has changed several times, which makes budgeting harder

Cursor is an AI-first code editor built on top of VS Code. It offers tab completion that predicts multi-line edits, a chat that understands your whole codebase, and Cursor Agent, which can plan and carry out changes across many files, run terminal commands and fix errors.

In 2026 SpaceX acquired Cursor, and in October 2026 Cursor became part of The X Subscription, a single plan that bundles Cursor with Grok and X Premium. Grok models are included in the subscription, while models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are available from the Premium tier and billed separately by usage.

Key features

  • Tab autocomplete that predicts your next edits, not just the next word.
  • Cursor Agent for multi-file changes, terminal commands and debugging, on every plan.
  • Cloud agents and automations that run tasks in the background (Premium and above).
  • Bugbot AI code review for pull requests (Premium and above).
  • Codebase chat with full repository context.
  • Model choice with Grok included and third-party models at API list price.

Third-party model usage in Cursor is not included in these prices and is charged at providers’ API rates. Existing subscribers on the older Cursor Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans can keep them for now.

Our experience using Cursor

Day to day, Cursor feels faster than most AI editors: completions are accurate and the agent handles routine changes well. Cloud agents are handy for running several tasks at once and reviewing them later.

The new pricing changes the value calculation. If you mostly used Claude or GPT models through Cursor, Premium plus API usage can cost more than the old $20 Pro plan. Developers who prefer Anthropic models may find Claude Code better value, while GitHub Copilot remains the cheapest multi-model option.

Who should use Cursor?

Cursor suits developers who want an AI-native editor and are happy with Grok models, or who do not mind paying API rates for other models. Teams that want predictable costs across many models should compare GitHub Copilot.

Cursor vs alternatives

GitHub Copilot offers many models for $10 per month. Claude Code is a stronger delegated agent for Anthropic users. Replit is better for building and hosting apps in the browser. Grok is included in the same X Subscription.
