GitHub Copilot Plans Explained: Free vs Pro vs Pro+ vs Max (2026)

GitHub Copilot now has four individual plans and a credit-based usage model. Here is what each plan includes and which one makes sense for you.
GitHub Copilot plans explained cover

GitHub Copilot is the most widely used AI coding assistant, and its pricing has changed a lot over time. In 2026 there are four plans for individual developers: Free, Pro, Pro+ and Max. Chat and agent usage is measured in GitHub AI Credits. This guide explains what you get on each plan and how to choose.

All prices and limits below were checked on GitHub’s official Copilot plans page in October 2026.

GitHub Copilot plans at a glance

PlanPriceAI credits per monthInline suggestions
Free$0Limited chat and agent use2,000 per month
Pro$10/month$15 ($10 base + $5 flex)Unlimited
Pro+$39/month$70 ($39 base + $31 flex)Unlimited
Max$100/month$200 ($100 base + $100 flex)Unlimited

How GitHub AI Credits work

Copilot measures chat and agent usage in GitHub AI Credits, where one credit equals $0.01. Each paid plan includes a base allowance equal to its price, plus a bonus “flex” allowance. When you run out, paid plans can buy additional credits. Inline code completions do not use credits on paid plans; they are unlimited.

In practice, a developer who mostly uses inline suggestions and occasional chat will rarely run out on Pro. Developers who lean heavily on agent mode, the cloud agent or long chat sessions are the ones who benefit from Pro+ or Max.

What each plan includes

Copilot Free

The free plan includes 2,000 inline suggestions a month plus limited chat and agent usage in your editor, the CLI and GitHub.com. It also supports agent mode, MCP servers, custom instructions and Copilot Spaces. It is enough to try Copilot properly, but heavy users will hit the limits quickly.

Copilot Pro ($10/month)

Pro is the best value for most individual developers. You get unlimited inline suggestions, $15 of monthly AI credits, code review on pull requests and the cloud agent, which can take an assigned issue and open a pull request for you to review.

Copilot Pro+ ($39/month)

Pro+ more than quadruples your AI credits to $70 a month and adds the ability to delegate work to third-party agents, such as Claude and OpenAI Codex. It suits developers who use agents every day.

Copilot Max ($100/month)

Max is for the heaviest users, with $200 of AI credits a month. Feature-wise it matches Pro+, so only choose it if you regularly use up the Pro+ allowance.

All plans give access to the same broad choice of models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Microsoft and others. Teams that need central billing, SSO and admin controls should look at GitHub’s organization plans instead.

Which Copilot plan should you choose?

  • Students, hobbyists and anyone testing Copilot: start with Free.
  • Most professional developers: Pro at $10/month is the sweet spot.
  • Daily agent users and people who want third-party agents: Pro+.
  • Power users who keep running out of credits on Pro+: Max.
